Lesson Steps

Part 1 - Mask Making

  1. Students consider what makes them the person they are beyond just their physical appearance (eg. hobbies, values, interests, family, cultural/religious beliefs, music, achievements, favourite foods etc.)

  2. They then use this information to create their own Magical Me Mask that represents the various aspects of their identity.

  3. Allow students at least 45 minutes to sketch and make their mask.

  4. Display the masks around the classroom so everyone can enjoy them.

Part 2 - Group Discussion

  1. Consider all the things you incorporated into your masks. These can be considered parts of your identity! Suggest a definition of identity.

🎓 Teacher note: Identity is our sense of self and includes things such as beliefs and characteristics.

  2. Who or what influences identity? Are some influences on identity stronger than others

🎓 Teacher note: Factors influencing identity may include peers, family, culture, religion, media and life experiences.

  3. Were there similarities between the masks created by different classmates? Is it possible to share aspects of identity with others yet remain unique?

🎓 Teacher note: There will often be parts of our identity that are alike others, but we remain unique, as the combination of factors that form our own identity are likely different.

  4. Does identity change over time? If so, is this a good thing?

🎓 Teacher note: Some aspects of identity will change as interests and circumstances change. This is indeed a good thing because it means we are evolving, learning and growing throughout our lives.

Reflection

Journal Prompts

  • How does your mask represent the things that make you, you?

  • What parts of your identity are you most proud of and why?

  • Provide an example of someone who has influenced your identity and briefly explain the impact they have had.

Extension

Take It Further

  • ME poem: Students create a poem encompassing the key aspects of their identity. For the younger year levels, this might be an acrostic poem while older year levels might create a rhyme or a haiku.

  • Historical Masks: Masks have been used throughout history for various social, religious and cultural purposes. Students investigate how masks have been utilised by different groups over time and how they link to expressing identity, or shielding it.

  • ME Dance: Students choreograph a one-minute dance that represents them. They choose a song to perform to and can share how they feel the song represents their identity.
