Activity
The Design Challenge
Pose the following scenario:
Your school’s theatre club is putting on a shadow play and needs simple, movable figures to help plan character blocking and scene compositions. They need you to design a low-cost, adaptable solution out of cardboard and Makedo.
Your Goal: Use Makedo tools and upcycled cardboard to create a 2D human figure that can be posed and used as a visual aid for storytelling or demonstrating movement.
Your Role: You are an industrial designer tasked with creating a moving product that will help kids explore movement and storytelling with flat movable figures in a shadow play.
Your Audience: Your creation will be used by students to explore concepts of shadow play through the use of movable figures that create shadows to tell a story.
The Scenario: Your school’s theatre club is putting on a play and needs poseable figures that can adjust and move to create shadows to tell a story. The figures should be easy to manipulate by students and teachers involved in the play production.
The Product: The product will be a poseable 2D human figure constructed from upcycled cardboard that is capable of demonstrating various body positions. These figures will act as puppets held in front of a light source and cast a shadow onto a screen.
