Activity

The Design Challenge

Pose the following scenario:

Your favourite toy has a big adventure coming up, but it needs a reliable way to get there. The journey is full of bumps, sharp turns, and maybe even a few hills! Use the provided Makedo tools and upcycled cardboard to build a creation that moves at least three feet without your toy falling out.

  • Your Goal: Design and build a transporter using only Makedo tools and upcycled cardboard that can safely and efficiently move your toy from a starting point to a finish line. The transporter must be both sturdy and creative.

  • Your Role: Imagine you're a world-class toy designer. Your next big project is to craft an epic vehicle out of cardboard, perfectly suited to your favourite toy's next grand adventure.

  • Your Audience: Your toy! Ensure your toy is securely held inside your transporter and that there is no risk of it falling out during the journey.

  • The Scenario: An incredible adventure full of obstacles awaits your toy, but it needs a solid ride to get there. Using Makedo tools and upcycled cardboard, build a vehicle that can successfully and safely move your toy a distance of at least three feet without a single spill.

  • The Product: Create a sturdy cardboard vehicle that will move your favourite toy from point A to point B without it falling out.

Reflection

Journal Prompts

  • What challenges did you face when creating your toy transporter? How did you overcome these?

  • What additions or adjustments could you make to enhance the experience for your toy while it travels in the vehicle?

  • How could you make your toy transporter more environmentally friendly?

Facilitation Tips

Guiding the Design Process

  • Design Process: Guide students through the design process. Research, sketch, plan, iterate, reiterate as needed, share!

  • Maker Budget: Set up a materials station and give students a maker budget. Make budget planning part of the process!

  • Introduce Annotated Sketches: Since they are on a limited budget, encourage students to sketch their ideas on paper before cutting out their design. This can help them visualise and refine their ideas without wasting cardboard from their budget!

  • Introduce a scrap bin: If you have the space, consider creating a “scrap bin” area for cut cardboard pieces. These smaller cardboard pieces can be used without counting against a student’s main maker budget.

  • Make time for reflection: Build in time for students to journal and discuss their process, as this is where learning occurs, and reflection provides them with time to synthesise their learning.

Extensions

Take It Further

  • Add moving parts to your vehicle with the Makedo Roto-Ring or Spin-hinge.

  • Conduct a race to see which vehicle is the fastest.

  • Measure the time each vehicle takes to travel a set distance and graph the results.

  • Write a story in which your toy is the main character, detailing the adventures they have in their vehicle.
