Activity
The Design Challenge
Pose the following scenario:
Your school is set to host some big events in the future, such as a concert and a design exhibition. While there is enough space and seating for the students and teachers, there aren’t any stored seats for additional guests. That’s where you come in!
Using your Makedo tools and connectors, create a cardboard seating solution for your school.
Your Goal: Use Makedo tools and connectors, along with upcycled cardboard, to create a prototype seating solution that functions as a real seat for school events.
Your Role: You are the designer tasked with creating seating for a space that will allow for multiple people to gather.
Your Audience: The seating solution should be usable for children and adults at a school event.
The Scenario: Your school is hosting an event, but lacks seating. They need a low-cost solution to this problem.
The Product: The product will be seating for single or multiple users, created using upcycled cardboard.
Reflection
Journal Prompts
What aspects of your design are you most pleased with?
Were there similarities between the designs that were most effective? What were they?
What was difficult about this challenge? Did anything surprise you?
What would you do to improve your design if you embarked on this challenge again?
What did you learn about the way cardboard works as a building material while creating your chair?
How could you advance your cardboard construction skills in the future (e.g. creating curves or more complex forms)?
Is your chair comfortable to sit on? What could you add or adjust to make it more inviting?
What are the potential benefits and drawbacks of using cardboard chairs on a larger scale?
Extensions
Take It Further
Design a seat that can hold more people than any other design.
Design a modular social seating system that can be arranged to form rows or groups.
Update the design to allow for easy storage by folding it away.
Increase the challenge by adding a requirement for the chair to support the weight of more than one person. Will it be strong enough for the teacher to sit on?
Draw inspiration from a particular design era when creating the chair (Victorian, Mid-Century Modern, etc.)
Create an entire collection of cardboard furniture.
