Geometric Headwear: Math Meets Makedo

Students will:

• Measure lengths using standard and nonstandard units

• Measure and calculate perimeters

• Identify and describe 2D and 3D shapes

• Reason with shapes and their attributes

• Apply math skills to design and create headwear 

• Become familiar with the Makedo tools and connectors by cutting, folding and connecting upcycled cardboard

• Learn to work with upcycled cardboard as a material for making and creative construction

Students can:

• Apply measurement skills to design headwear

• Reason with shapes to create intriguing cardboard crowns

• Reproduce a scale drawing at varying scales

• Provide perimeter, volume, or other targeted math skills after designing and creating cardboard couture

• Cut, fold and connect using the Makedo tools and connectors with upcycled cardboard to create headwear

• Manipulate cardboard to create desired effects, including structure, stability and style

Shape attributes

These are aspects of the shape that make it similar or different from other shapes, such as edges, vertices, and lengths. 

Nonstandard units of measurement

Units of measurement that aren't typically used, such as a pencil, a finger's width, or even a Makedo Scru-Driver!

Scale

A ratio representing the relationship between how much smaller or larger the model/drawing of an object is, compared to the actual object. Older students might like to draw their headwear on graph paper, and then scale up their drawing to create it on a larger scale with cardboard.
