Introduction

From Boxes to Battlements
In this Project-Based Learning (PBL) unit, students take on the role of medieval architects and advisors tasked with designing a defensible castle for a feudal lord. Rather than building on imagination alone, students will ground every design decision in primary-source evidence, using research to view historical maps, illustrated or illuminated manuscripts, and life in medieval times. The cardboard castle creation is more than just a final product; it's also the means to their investigation. Every structural choice will be justified by citing a historical source.
