Art in Motion: Roto-Ring Kinetic Sculpture

Students will:

• Investigate how abstract and geometric shapes of varying sizes and placement can create intriguing (striking) visual effects.

• Explore depth and dimension by creating a relief effect with the physical layering of cardboard.

• Explore the Roto-Ring and how a single central pivot point can create kinetic abstract art with layers that rotate independently.

Students can:

• Construct a layered abstract piece with Roto-Ring and cardboard to demonstrate an understanding of compositional balance.

• Use the Roto-Ring to add movement to at least three different-sized shapes to create new, complex patterns.

• Create a focal point in the design using layered cardboard to demonstrate how the artwork changes as the layered pieces are moved into different positions.
