Check out all the tips and tricks to help you master the Makedo Scru-Driver! Simply punch a hole through cardboard, insert the Scru or Scru+ into the socket end of the Scru-Driver, and join cardboard with a few quick turns.

Tips for Punching a Hole

The ultimate companion tool for the Scru connector allows makers to connect cardboard quickly and securely. At one end, there is a punch for making holes. At the other end is the socket for the Scru.

Scru-Driver Tips

  • Punch holes: Always punch a hole before connecting. Support with your free hand or hold a scrap piece of cardboard behind to stabilise if needed.

  • Smooth, not stabby: Use a firm, smooth action to punch holes for the Scru, avoiding fast or stabbing motions.

  • For tougher boxes: Slowly tilt the tool handle side to side while pressing against firmer cardboard. Apply equal force from behind.

  • Too many layers: If it is hard to punch all the way through, you may need to separate the layers and punch your hole in one or two pieces at a time.

Safety Tip: Never towards the face! Keep your making safe by never pulling or pushing the Makedo tools towards the face of an active maker.

Joining Cardboard

Strong, secure connection: The thread of the Scru compresses the layers of cardboard together as it tightens. The friction between the layers maintains a firm connection. This means the Scru does not need to be tightened with extra force.

Tips for using the Scru-Driver

  • Connect cardboard: Snap the Scru to the end of the Scru-Driver, then insert the Scru into the hole in your cardboard.

  • Twist to the right: Twist righty tighty to join cardboard together with the Makedo Scru.

  • Twist to the left: Twist left to remove the Scru and separate the cardboard pieces.

  • Don’t overtighten: Once the Scru naturally stops turning, that will be enough for a strong, secure connection.

Makedo Tip: Most of the time, but not always, the connection is secure when the Scru head is level with the surface of the cardboard.

How to Use the Mini-Tool

The mini-tool is just like a Scru-Driver made mini! It works with the Makedo Scru and Scru+ for connecting cardboard quickly and securely.

Tips for using the Mini-Tool

  • Small fit: Connect in tight spaces where the Scru-Driver won’t.

  • Pointy bit: Includes a point for pre-punching holes.

  • Accessible: Intuitive design helps younger makers work on fine motor skills.

  • Easy-grip ring: Twist like a wingnut when connecting or disassembling.

  • Smooth action: Place the point against the cardboard, and push through the surface with a firm grip and smooth action.

  • For tougher boxes: Try slowly tilting the Mini-Tool from side to side while applying force to help the point break through the outer layer of cardboard.
