Activity

Bite-Sized Build

Students build a chair from upcycled cardboard. They may take inspiration from chairs they can see around them or use the cardboard to create an entirely new design.

Reflection

Journal Prompts

  • What did you learn about the way cardboard works as a building material while creating your chair?

  • How could you advance your cardboard construction skills in the future (eg. creating curves or more complex forms)?

  • Is your chair comfortable to sit on? What could you add or adjust to make it more inviting?

  • What are the potential benefits and downfalls of cardboard chairs on a wider scale?

Extension

Take It Further

  • Increase the challenge by adding a requirement for the chair to support the weight of more than one person. Will it be strong enough for the teacher to sit on?

  • Draw inspiration from a particular design era when creating the chair (Victorian, Mid-Century Modern, etc.)

  • Create an entire collection of cardboard furniture.
